These days, there are a lot of us didn't know much about the car we drive everyday. Sadly, the only thing we know is to pump in petrol and drive them. Other than that, we will only seek help when the car has either funny noise or it broke down just like that!!!

Recently, I have quite a tough time with my car - perhaps it's an old car, and today is the first day I drove the car which was sent and stayed in the workshop for over 5 days. Half way driving, this funny indicator lighted up and I was like, 'Huh?'

Thanks to Mr Google and I found some helpful dashboard indicator 101.

So, what does it means when this particular sign being lighted up?

Engine Warning or Malfunction Indicator

As the name illustrated, this shows that there is a problem with the engine's management system or engine emissions control system. If the indicator is being lighted up with the engine running, please send your car to the dealer asap. If you will need to continue driving, avoid heavy acceleration and reduce the vehicle speed immediately. Quickly send to your workshop and get it checked.

The common problems to this indicator are vacuum hose leaks, failed oxygen sensor, loose gas cap, failure in electronics.

ABS Indicator

ABS stands for anti-lock braking system and when it's being lighted up, it indicates a fault with it. ABS systm is designed to keep you safe during panic stops - by limiting wheels from locking which offers better steering control. ABS brakes also helps to shorten the distance while you intended to stop the car. Although it's lighted up, don't panic as you will still have normal brake ability but without anti-lock function.

The common problems to this indicator are bad electrical connection or broken wire, wheel sensor malfunction.

Engine Oil Pressure Warning Indicator

This indicator is warning you of low oil levels. The main function of the oil is to lubricate moving parts in the engine. It also cleans and inhibits corrosion, improves sealing and cools the engine by carrying heat away. Driving with insufficient oil can cause serious damage to the car's engine. In the circumstances of if upon adding the oil and the light remained lighted up, it might have been your engine is leaking.

The common problems are excessive main bearing wear, oil level is either low, worn or broken oil pump.

Hope the above helps, thanks to kereta.info for the information =)
