I was on my few days break before I start a brand new chapter of my life. So, it was a normal Saturday. After my usual morning routine, I went down to the living room and saw my grandmother was resting at the hall. I went up to her and have a small chat with her and I proceed with breakfast.
Mom and dad went out for doctor appointment and they mentioned that grandmother has been complaining about being unwell. So, they got me to keep an eye on her.
After breakfast, I went up to grandmother again and checked if everything is ok. She replied that she wanted to go to washroom and she started to rise from the chair. She then complained about not being able to feel anything on her right feet and I was like - may be it's just numbness which she always get it. I got her to move and shake her leg before proceeding. The next minute when she wanted to stand up, she felt on me as she has no control of her right part of her body. I kept insisted that it was pure numbness and slowly, I ushered her to the toilet.
For safety purposes, I went into toilet with her. Then I noticed that she really has no control of her right part. For a short journey (less than 30 secs normal pace of walking) from the chair to the toiler, she has to stop fr 3 times. After the toilet break, she rested at the dining hall and I noticed her face gesture started to be crooked. At that very moment, I knew something is definitely wrong and I need to bring her to clinic.
While I tried to get her from the dining hall to the car, she was literally relying on me to walk... She stopped for 3 times again for a short journey and at the front door, she gave up to walk to my car. I couldn't carried her by myself and the next best thing I could do is to get ambulance.
It was my first time calling an ambulance. I called 999 and within 20 minutes, the ambulance arrived. There were 4 of them at our doorstep and they started with doing a basic test on my grandmother. Then, they get her onto the ambulance and off we go to General Hospital in Kuala Lumpur.
Thank GOD we called the ambulance as it was massive jam out there... Guess people were doing last minute shopping before fasting month started! Thankfully with ambulance, we managed to get into emergency unit within 20 minutes. The experience being in an ambulance was quite thrilling as you will get to see how the skillful driver "cross" through the busy traffic.
Once we signed into the emergency unit-semi critical zone, doctor started checking here and there and pre-diagnosed was stroke. Half an hour later, mom and dad came and grandmother was transferred to critical zone to do the scanning... Not long after, my aunt came and we stayed for a while.
According to doctor, grandmother was diagnosed with half side stroke and she has to stay for moderation and treatment. Within 1 week, grandmother was able to lift her right hand, her face gesture was back to normal, but she has no control to the leg.
Look back at this 2 weeks were pretty tiring as after work, both mom and myself will visit grandmother. During weekends, dad and mom continued...
Just yesterday, she got transferred to Cheras rehabilitation centre and we will visit her only during weekends due to the distance. Pray hard for my grandmother to get well soon!
